THE ROAD OF COMPASSION

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.” - Robert Frost.
Once again, I found myself back on the road… or as Gene Autry so joyfully sang, “back in the saddle again.” There is something about the open road that feels like home to my soul. As I drove away, my heart held both gratitude and tenderness. Leaving my sister behind was not easy. There was sweetness in our time together and sadness in the goodbye. Yet, the road has always been a place of serenity for me. With the radio turned off and distractions set aside, I allowed my thoughts to wander. Mile after mile, memories surfaced—of recent journeys, sacred encounters, unexpected blessings, and quiet moments of reflection. The last few months have been rich with lessons and love, even in their challenges. And then my thoughts turned to this year. The angels have called it The Year of Compassion. As I reflected on that, I realized how clearly I have been witnessing this divine theme unfold. Compassion has been showing up in ordinary places through extraordinary hearts.
One beautiful example came to mind immediately. It was the receptionist at the center where my sister will be receiving radiation treatments. From the moment we met her, her bright smile wrapped around us like a warm blanket. But her kindness did not stop there. She radiated love. She shared stories of patients who had touched her heart, moments that had changed her, and reminders of why she does what she does. In the midst of her sharing, she reached out with a tiny treasure—a “little Jesus.” Just a bit bigger than a thimble, dressed with a colored sash. She gave one to Billie and one to me. I couldn’t help but smile. Last year, I began collecting and sharing these little reminders of divine presence. They are small, yet powerful symbols that say, “Jesus loves you.” Seeing her offer one so freely felt like an angelic wink. Of course, she made sure ours had orange sashes. She laughed and teased us, reminding us she was a Tennessee fan and that we Kentuckians were on “opposing teams.” In that moment, humor, love, faith, and compassion blended into something sacred. A simple exchange became a holy encounter. That is how angels often work. They show up through receptionists, drivers, strangers, nurses, friends, and even playful sports rivalries. They remind us that every path we walk is filled with opportunities to choose love.
As I continued driving, I realized once again that the “road less traveled” is not about distance or geography. It is about choosing compassion when it would be easier to close our hearts. It is about choosing kindness when we are tired. It is about choosing faith when circumstances feel heavy. That choice… makes all the difference. As I witnessed a sky filled with deep red from the sunset, my heart seemed extra full from my day of reminiscing.
Dear Angels, how do I continue walking the path of compassion, even when the road feels uncertain or lonely?
Dear Ones, the path of compassion is illuminated by your willingness to see with the eyes of the heart. You are never alone upon it. Each loving thought, each gentle word, each small act of kindness calls forth unseen helpers who walk beside you. When the road feels heavy, remember that compassion begins within. Tend first to your own soul. Rest when needed. Receive love as freely as you give it. As you honor your own sacred journey, you become a living beacon for others. Trust that every step taken in love is guided. Trust that every meeting is purposeful. Trust that your open heart is changing the world, one encounter at a time.
Angel Whisper: Beloved, walk gently. Walk bravely. Walk with love as your compass. Every compassionate step you take leaves light behind for others to follow.
Today, I promise to continue my journey with my heart full of compassion.
