HAND ME DOWN GOD

Two birds on branches

“I know you've taken to wearing around

your father's hand-me-down anger but I

wish that you wouldn't

it's a few sizes too big and everyone

can see it doesn't fit you makes you

look silly hangs loose in all the wrong

places”  Sarah Kay

This poem touched me to my core so I listened to the entire poem being read by the author. It is such a profound message about ending the cycle of dysfunction and hateful energy that can be carried forth from our ancestors. I wore hand-me-downs growing up. My older sister is 5 years older than me, so you can use your imagination to see what that picture looked like. Let’s look at another aspect of what can be passed on to us, though. I heard a speech that asked the question, “do you have a hand-me-down God?” Uh oh. Maybe that doesn’t fit right, either? Maybe it hangs loose in all the wrong places as Sarah wrote? I am always encouraging free thinking and examining your beliefs. For myself, I have made many wardrobe changes throughout my life. I have researched and experienced and prayed to the God of my understanding and am confident in my belief system. I don’t push it onto others. Instead, I quote Don Miguel Ruiz who teaches us to “be skeptical but learn to listen.” The listening is to your intuition, your gut, your higher self. Listen with an open mind and see if the hand-me-down fits.

Dear Angels, beliefs often get passed down through generations, becoming "hand-me-down" ideas that we accept without questioning. While these inherited beliefs can offer comfort and a sense of identity, they may also limit our understanding of the world and our spiritual growth. On the other hand, they may fit perfectly and no adjustments are necessary.

Dear Ones, in today’s swirling energies and shifting realities, we encourage you to remember the profound importance of integrity and open-mindedness. These virtues are your guiding lights, helping you navigate the complexities of this world with grace and wisdom. Integrity is your anchor. It is the commitment to align your thoughts, words, and actions with your highest truth. In a world where confusion and deception can often cloud judgment, your integrity is what keeps you centered in love and authenticity. When you act with integrity, you create a ripple effect, bringing clarity and trust into your relationships and the broader world. Know that every time you choose to act with honesty, kindness, and respect, you are contributing to the healing of the world. Your integrity is a beacon, inspiring others to live with the same level of truthfulness and compassion. Open-mindedness is your gateway to growth. The world is vast, filled with countless perspectives and experiences. To be open-minded is to be willing to listen, to learn, and to expand beyond the boundaries of your current understanding. In today’s world, where division and judgment often arise from fear, open-mindedness is a powerful tool for unity and peace. It allows you to see the Divine in all things and to embrace the diversity of human experience with love. By keeping your mind open, you create space for new possibilities, for deeper connections, and for the wisdom that comes from truly understanding one another. We encourage you to embody these virtues in all aspects of your life. Let your integrity be the foundation upon which you stand, and let your open-mindedness be the wings that allow you to soar. Together, they will guide you toward a life of purpose, joy, and harmony. Know that as you walk this path, we are with you, supporting and uplifting you with our love and light.

Dear Angels, thank you. I love you. Namaste, y’all.

Today, I promise to stay in my integrity and hold myself up to the fire of understanding as I open my mind to what resonates with my soul.

The Four Agreements (from the Toltec teachings):

Be Impeccable with Your Word: Speak with integrity and say only what you mean. Use your words to spread truth and love, not to harm or deceive.

Don’t Take Anything Personally: Recognize that others' actions and words are a reflection of their own reality, not yours. By not taking things personally, you free yourself from unnecessary suffering.

Don’t Make Assumptions: Avoid making assumptions that lead to misunderstandings and conflict. Instead, ask questions and communicate clearly to foster mutual understanding.

Always Do Your Best: In every situation, do your best based on your abilities and circumstances. Your best will vary from moment to moment, but this practice ensures that you live without regret.

To these foundational principles, the Toltec wisdom adds a Fifth Agreement:

Be Skeptical, But Learn to Listen: This agreement encourages you to question everything, including your own beliefs, while remaining open to new ideas. It’s about finding balance—maintaining a healthy skepticism to avoid blind acceptance, yet keeping an open mind to allow for growth and understanding. This combination of doubt and openness empowers you to discover your own truth and live authentically.
