BE WATER

"Be Water, My Friend.
Empty your mind.
Be formless, shapeless, like water.
You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup.
You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle.
You put it into a teapot, it becomes the teapot.
Now water can flow or it can crash.
Be water, my friend."— Bruce Lee
There is something mesmerizing about watching water. It does not argue with the shape of the riverbank. It does not resist the rocks placed in its path. It simply finds a way. Sometimes it flows gently around the obstacle. Sometimes it gathers strength and rushes over it. Sometimes it becomes perfectly still. Yet, through it all, it remains water. Perhaps that is one of the greatest spiritual lessons nature offers us: we can adapt without losing who we are.
I came across a beautiful image that made me think about this. Imagine geese flying naturally across a clear blue sky. Beneath them is a perfectly still lake, reflecting their image as they pass overhead. The geese are not trying to paint themselves onto the water. The lake is not struggling to capture their reflection. Neither is making an effort to create the moment. It simply happens. And when the geese disappear beyond the horizon, the lake does not try to hold onto their image. It lets them go.
What if we lived our lives that way? People, circumstances, emotions, disappointments, joys, challenges and unexpected blessings are constantly flying across the landscape of our lives. We experience them. We feel them. We learn from them. But somewhere along the way, we often decide that we need to hold onto them. We replay the conversation. We revisit the hurt. We worry about what might happen tomorrow. We try to recreate yesterday. Instead of allowing the experience to be reflected in our consciousness and then released, we grab hold of it and say, “Stay here. I am not finished with you yet.” And then we wonder why our waters become turbulent.
There is wisdom in becoming like the lake—present enough to reflect what is happening clearly, but peaceful enough not to cling to the image after it has passed. This does not mean that we become indifferent or disconnected. Quite the opposite. When we are fully present, we can experience life more deeply because we are not constantly dragging yesterday into today.
Bruce Lee also taught, “Empty your mind; moving, be like water; still, be like a mirror; respond like an echo.” There is such freedom in those words.
Flow when it is time to flow.
Be still when it is time to be still.
Reflect what is before you without becoming what is before you.
And then let it pass.
I think sometimes we humans believe surrender means giving up. It does not. Surrender is releasing our insistence that life must unfold according to the picture we have created in our minds. Water has no such argument with life. Put a rock in the middle of a stream and the water does not sit there complaining, “Well, this certainly wasn't part of the plan!” It finds another way.
Maybe there is a message there for us. Life will place rocks in our streams. Plans will change. People will change. Doors will close. Unexpected paths will appear. There will be moments when we are asked to flow and moments when we are called to become still. The challenge is remembering that none of those things change the essence of who we are. I am still me. You are still you. The Divine spark within us does not disappear because the container changes.
Dear Angels, how do we learn to become like water and move through life without resisting everything that comes our way?
Dear Ones, you have been taught to believe that strength means holding tightly. We invite you to consider that sometimes your greatest strength is found in releasing. Look at the water. It does not fear the bend in the river because it trusts the flow. It does not mourn the shape it held yesterday because it knows its essence has not changed.
You, too, are learning to flow. There will be experiences that enter your awareness just as the birds appear upon the surface of a still lake. See them. Feel them. Honor them. Learn what they have come to teach you. Then allow them to continue their journey. You do not have to carry every experience with you. You do not have to hold every hurt. You do not have to understand every change. You do not have to know where the river leads before allowing yourself to move with its current.
Remember, Dear Ones, water does not lose itself when it changes form. Whether resting quietly in a lake, flowing through a river, falling gently as rain or crashing powerfully against the shore, it remains what it was created to be. So do you.
When life asks you to move, flow.
When Spirit asks you to wait, become still.
When an experience appears before you, reflect upon it without allowing it to define you.
And when its time with you is complete, bless it and let it go. Trust the current. Trust the journey. Trust the Divine presence flowing through you. There is no need to fight every rock in the river. Sometimes you simply flow around it.
Angels Whisper: Be like water today. Flow around what does not require a battle. Become still when your soul asks for quiet. Reflect what appears before you, but do not cling to what has already passed. The river does not need to know every turn before it begins its journey to the sea. Neither do you. Trust the flow, Dear One. Spirit knows the way.
Today, I promise to be water.
