There's Always Chocolate ... and Memories

“The loss is unmeasurable but so is the love left behind.” – Unknown

I’ve been sitting here for the last couple of hours going through thousands of messages between myself and my friend Paula over the years. Many made me laugh out loud and that was exactly what I needed as I know that is how she would want me to remember her. Paula lost her battle with cancer yesterday. She was a sister to me, a cheerleader during some of my biggest life struggles, a confidant and a partner in crime when we wanted to just go out and go a little crazy. When life gives you a special person like that, you never think about not having them there. They will always be there, right? They are incapable of leaving. And yet, her sweet soul returned to the place where she is no longer suffering and fighting just to keep her body going. She is no longer just my earth angel who helped me through so much; now she is my sweet angel helping me grieve her and laugh at her silliness as I do so. I love you so big my angel and when the heart hurt gets too much, well there’s always chocolate…

Dear Angels, this part of being human really sucks. When a loved one is no longer there for a hug, a phone call, a playdate, we are left with a void that is hard to fill. I do rejoice in the knowledge that she is no longer suffering and am happy for her that she has returned to spirit. I am sad for those of us who basked in her bright light. I know there are no words at this moment that can help any of us stop the tears and the heart hurt.

Dear Ones, you are correct. Loving someone means you create a space inside your heart just for them. It is THEIR space and you build memories with each other that are special. When that part is ripped away it is very tender and can leave you feeling a little lost. When this happens, ask yourself “did I love enough?” “Did I laugh enough?” “Can I let go of this hurt long enough to remember the love and laughter?” There are no easy answers when it comes to grief and nothing that can soothe the pain. Don’t let it keep you from loving others in your life, Dear Ones. Each moment is precious. Hold those who have gone before you deep in that special place inside your heart reserved for them. Visit with them often and continue to share love and laughter together. They have simply moved to another room. Go sit with them and eat chocolate…and smile because the journey together is so amazing. We will hold you while you release those tears full of love.

Dear Angels, thank you. I love you. Namaste y’all.

Today, I promise to honor each person who has touched my life and hold them in a special chamber inside my heart.

I love you Paula Flohr and will eat the chocolate for us both now until I see you again, sweet loving sister. Go rest after the struggles you have been through. I will never forget all that you have done for me in my life, especially the joy you brought with your warm smile and encouraging words.
