DON’T-KNOW MIND

“I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious Ambiguity.”  Gilda Radner

There is something magical about autumn, especially here in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina where I currently find myself. Everywhere I look, Mother Nature is putting on a spectacular show. The trees are dressed in brilliant shades of crimson, burnt orange, golden yellow, and deep burgundy. The mountains seem to be wearing a magnificent patchwork quilt, lovingly stitched together by the hand of God. Each leaf tells its own story of transformation, and the crisp mountain air whispers that change is upon us.

As I travel through this breathtaking landscape, I find myself reflecting on how effortlessly nature embraces change. The trees do not cling desperately to their leaves, begging them to stay. They do not worry about the approaching winter or question whether spring will ever return. They simply allow the process to unfold, trusting the wisdom of the seasons. Oh, if only we humans could learn to do the same! How many times have we wanted life to follow a carefully written script? We envision the perfect beginning, the perfect journey, and certainly the perfect ending. We want guarantees that our choices will lead us to happiness, that our relationships will last, and that the road ahead will be smooth and clearly marked. And then life happens.

The unexpected phone call comes. Plans fall apart. A door closes without warning. Someone we love leaves our life. Or perhaps something wonderful appears out of nowhere, inviting us to step into a future we never imagined. Suddenly, we find ourselves standing in that uncomfortable space between what was and what will be. The space of not knowing.

The teachings of Zen Buddhism offer a beautiful practice often referred to as beginner's mind, along with the related concept of don't-know mind. These teachings invite us to approach life with curiosity rather than certainty, openness rather than resistance. Instead of insisting that we already know how things should unfold, we become willing students of the present moment. What a liberating concept!

I have certainly had plenty of opportunities to practice this in my life. In my life’s journey, I have come to realize that there are no certainties, no idea where the road would lead. I could not have imagined the lives I would touch and the people who would teach me, the sacred places I would visit, or the extraordinary experiences that would become part of my story. With every detour, delay, unexpected blessing, all I could do was trust. Now, I find myself once again standing at the doorway of the unknown. One chapter has reached its conclusion, but the next has yet to unfold. There is a part of me that would love to peek around the corner and see what God has planned. Yet, another part of me is learning to smile at the mystery. Perhaps that is what Gilda Radner meant by delicious ambiguity. There is a sweetness in allowing life to surprise us.

As I watch the autumn leaves drifting gently toward the earth here in North Carolina, I am reminded that their falling is not a tragedy. It is simply part of the cycle of life. The brilliant colors we admire are part of the tree's preparation for a season of rest. What appears to be an ending is also preparation for a new beginning. Spring will bring tender green buds and fresh possibilities. Summer will offer warmth, growth, and abundance. Autumn will invite us to release what has served its purpose. Winter will call us inward for reflection, restoration, and renewal. Each season has its own beauty, its own lessons, and its own divine timing. And so do we.

Dear Angels, how do we learn to embrace the unknown instead of fearing it? How can we find peace in the space between what has ended and what has not yet begun? And how do we trust that something beautiful is unfolding when we cannot see what comes next?

Dear Ones, look around you. The answers you seek are being whispered through the magnificent colors of the trees, the gentle falling of the leaves, and the changing rhythm of Mother Earth. Do you see the trees trembling in fear as they release their leaves? Do you hear them crying out because they cannot see the blossoms of spring? No, dear hearts. They simply surrender to the season they are experiencing, knowing at the deepest level of their being that life continues even when its outward appearance changes.

You, too, are part of this sacred rhythm. So often you resist change because you believe that certainty brings safety. You want to know the outcome before taking the first step. You want assurance that your decisions will lead to happiness and that nothing unexpected will interrupt your carefully constructed plans. Yet, Dear Ones, consider how much beauty you would miss if every moment of your life were already known. Where would be the wonder? Where would be the discovery? Where would be the opportunity to grow beyond what you once believed possible? The unknown is not your enemy. It is the sacred space where possibilities are waiting to become experiences.

You ask how to savor the gap between the invisible and the visible. We invite you to stop viewing that space as emptiness. It is not empty at all. It is filled with potential, with divine inspiration, and with opportunities that your human eyes have not yet recognized. Why do you demand to see the outcome of every experience before allowing yourself to live it?

Beloveds, faith is not the absence of uncertainty. Faith is the willingness to walk with uncertainty while trusting that you are never walking alone. There will be times when change brings sadness. There will be moments when releasing something familiar feels painful. We do not ask you to deny those feelings or pretend that every transition is easy. Allow yourself to grieve what has passed. Honor the memories. Celebrate the lessons. Then gently open your heart to what is waiting to be born.

Remember that the tree does not become less beautiful because its leaves have fallen. Its strength remains within, even when its branches stand bare against the winter sky. So it is with you. Your worth does not diminish when a chapter closes. Your purpose does not disappear when a familiar path ends. Your light does not fade simply because you cannot yet see the next destination. You are always becoming.

We invite you to cultivate the wonder of a child who discovers something new without needing to understand everything about it. Ask questions. Explore possibilities. Be willing to be surprised. Release the belief that every experience must fit neatly into the story you thought you were writing. Sometimes the most beautiful chapters are the ones you never planned. And when uncertainty visits, instead of asking, "What if everything goes wrong?" try asking, "What if something wonderful is preparing to happen?" Feel the difference in your heart when you make that shift.

Dear Ones, you have walked through many seasons of your life already. Some have been filled with sunshine and laughter. Others have brought storms that seemed endless. Yet here you are, still growing, still learning, still carrying the divine spark of love within you. Trust that spark. Trust the wisdom that has carried you this far. Trust that you do not need to see the entire staircase to take the next step. And most of all, trust that the love of the Creator is not dependent upon your understanding of the journey.

As the leaves dance through the autumn air, let them remind you that surrender can be beautiful. As the mountains glow with their magnificent colors, remember that transformation can reveal beauty you never knew existed. Do not rush through the season you are in simply because you are anxious to reach the next one. Be here. Be curious. Be grateful. Be willing. There is beauty in the becoming, blessings in the waiting, and divine love surrounding you through every season.

Angels Whisper: Do not fear the changing seasons of your life. Just as the trees release their leaves without knowing the exact moment spring will arrive, you too can release what is complete and trust the unfolding of what is yet to be. The unknown is not an empty space. It is a sacred place of infinite possibilities. You are not required to see the entire path, only to take the next step with love and faith. Let your heart be curious, your spirit be willing, and your soul be at peace. There is beauty in the becoming, blessings in the waiting, and divine love surrounding you through every season. Trust the journey, beloveds. The story is still being written.

Today, I promise to see the possibilities in each unknown moment.
