BRIGHT LIGHTS AND SUPERHEROES

“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” —Christopher Reeve
Christopher Reeve knew something about being a hero and he also knew the heartbreak of struggle and overwhelming obstacles. As Superman he could leap tall buildings and swoop into precarious situations to battle the villains. After a horrifying accident while riding a horse in a competition, his superpowers were proven to be only on screen. His neck was broken, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. This did not deter his superhero energy, however, and he lived the rest of his life advocating for spinal cord research and treatment. Sometimes heroes do not wear a cape – they have a much bigger mission. I think of the people in my life that I admire and how they use their wounds for wisdom instead of wallowing in self-pity.
My friend David Brett lost his sixteen-year-old son to suicide in 2011 as a result of multiple concussions suffered on the football field leaving him in excruciating pain and never receiving the proper diagnosis or post-concussion protocols. Afterward, David and his wife took action to advocate for those who suffered concussions and were still allowed to play football. They started the Daniel Brett Foundation and worked diligently to have a standardization of protocols for injured young athletes. Because of their perseverance and advocacy, the Florida Concussion Law was passed, barring young athletes who endure concussions from returning to practice or play until they are cleared by a physician. Tonight I had the privilege of dining with new friends, Chris and Carla Sloan in Miami. They lost their seven-year-old son Calder in 2014 in a tragic accident. They have since started The Caleb and Calder Sloan Awesome Foundation whose mission is to help disadvantaged children as well as children who are dealing with grief and loss. They also actively promote awareness of the dangers of electrocution in swimming pools which may have faulty or ungrounded wiring in underwater lights. Next is the story of Melanie Winter, a dear friend I met last year at one of my angel circles. Her 18-year-old son was killed in a tragic car accident in 2025. Following his death, Melanie decided to honor her son by taking action. She is currently on the docket of getting her bill passed, Florida Statute 316.1933, which requires testing after a crash involving death or serious bodily injury if a law enforcement officer has probable cause to believe the driver was under the influence. She also distributes a life-saving device with her son’s name on it to break a car window from the inside which includes a method of cutting the seatbelt loose. I carry one of these in my car and think of Melanie and the impact she is making in the world after this tragedy. She started a nonprofit organization in honor of her son, Aidan’s Forever Impact. Her main goals are to raise awareness by emphasizing the dangers of reckless driving, not only by statistics, but by real stories of victims. Learn more here: https://aidansforeverimpact.com/
These are just a few of the stories that I am personally aware of where loved ones are turning “pain into purpose” as Melanie says. Today in a discussion with my friend Ruth, we came across a phrase by Calista in her oracle card deck, The Female Archangels, that says “breaks lead to breakthroughs.” It is certainly true for all of these heartbreaking stories shared here.
Dear Angels, I know that we sometimes face unbearable pain through life’s experiences and it seems that those who face the biggest heartbreaks sometimes can find their purpose by taking action. Is it our heartbreaking pain that drives the passionate desire to create change? Or is it us recognizing our Divine destiny?
Dear Ones, some souls volunteer to come into the world for a minute to implement great change. They know before incarnation that theirs is a destiny far greater than simply coming into the world, having experiences and growing old before leaving. We are not saying that there is anything wrong with that; just that some take on the difficult tasks that will lead to a greater cause. In each case that was highlighted here, there was a need for something to be changed that would be of help to others in your world. In honoring a loved one in this way, you are acknowledging their sacrifice. They were all superheroes. They do not regret their actions or feel bad at what is referred to as tragedy. Their life served a purpose and is making a difference. This is a great honor. Some volunteer to come to Earth as teachers, some as leaders and some as influencers. You are all teaching and learning from each other. Many of you are stepping up as leaders in your world. Those with an influencer role are ones who understand the assignment. They have evolved as masters who chose to come in for a shorter time to make a great impact. Your grief for them is so deep because they showed you their beautiful hearts in the time you spent with them. They are pure unconditional love, and that can never be destroyed. The legacies they leave behind are a testament to their dedication to creating a better world.
Angels Whisper: Bright is the light that chooses the good of the whole over the easy road. That light can never be extinguished.
Today, I promise to be a better human in my actions and always seek ways to be of service while I am in the world.
