"We are all living in cages with the door wide open." — George Lucas
What a powerful image. A cage with the door standing wide open, yet we remain inside. How many times have we felt stuck in some area of our lives? We feel trapped in a job that no longer brings us joy, a relationship that has run its course, a financial situation that seems impossible to change, or circumstances that leave us wondering how we got here, and how do we get out? Sometimes the cage is not even something we can see. It is made of beliefs, fears, expectations, old wounds, other people’s opinions, and stories we have repeated to ourselves for so long that we have accepted them as truth.
I can’t do that.
It’s too late for me.
What if I fail?
What will people think?
I don’t know what will happen if I leave.
And so we sit inside the cage, staring through an open door. Franklin D. Roosevelt famously said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Fear has an interesting way of disguising itself as protection. It tells us, Stay here. At least you know what this feels like. At least you know what to expect. But familiar does not necessarily mean safe, and comfortable does not always mean aligned. Sometimes the greatest act of faith we can make is simply taking one step toward the open door.
When I think about fear, one thing stands out strongly for me is regret. I do not want to come to the final days of this earthly journey and realize that I saw the open door but never walked through it. I do not want to look back and wonder what might have happened if I had trusted God a little more, listened to the angels a little more closely, or believed in myself enough to take the next step.
I want to know that I lived.
I want to know that when Spirit whispered, Go, I went.
When the path appeared, I walked it.
When the door opened, I stepped through.
That does not mean there was no fear. Courage is not necessarily the absence of fear. Sometimes courage is looking fear squarely in the eyes and saying, “You can come along if you must, but you are not driving.” There have been many times on my journey when I could not see what was beyond the next bend. I did not have all the answers. I certainly did not have guarantees. What I had was trust. Again and again, the angels have reminded me that I do not need to understand the entire journey before taking the next step. The human mind wants a map. Spirit asks for faith. Perhaps that is the real lesson of the open cage. We keep waiting for someone to come along and set us free, while Heaven is gently pointing toward the door.
Dear Angels, if the cage door is already open, why are we sometimes so afraid to walk through it?
Dear Ones, because the familiar can feel safer than freedom. You have learned to identify yourselves with the walls around you. You have named them circumstances, limitations, responsibilities, age, history, mistakes and impossibilities. After looking at those walls for long enough, you may forget that they were never meant to define you. Freedom asks something of you. It asks you to trust what you cannot yet see.
You need not leap through the doorway. Simply move toward it. One thought can be a step. One new choice can be a step. One boundary, one prayer, one courageous yes or necessary no can move you closer to the life your soul is calling you toward.
Do not allow fear of failure to become fear of living. There are no wasted steps when you walk consciously with the Divine. Even the paths that do not unfold as you expected can bring wisdom, strength, clarity and redirection. Ask yourself, What would I choose if fear were not making this decision? Then become still. Listen.
The doorway may be closer than you think. We are beside you as you discover that the freedom you have been seeking has been within you all along. You are loved beyond measure.
Angels Whisper: The door is open, dear one. You do not have to see the entire path beyond it. Trust God enough to take one step. Freedom begins the moment you remember that fear does not hold the key—you do.
Today, I promise to trust the journey and remain free of the cage of regret.
