LET YOUR PEACE BLOSSOM

“When we are peaceful, when we are happy, we can blossom like a flower, and everyone in our family, our entire society will benefit from our peace.” Thich Nhat Hanh

I remember the day Thich Nhat Hanh died. I remember crying because it seemed as if a light had gone out in the world as the life left his body. My mind knew that he was still alive spiritually, yet that knowledge did little to console my heart. I had listened to his teachings for years and resonated deeply with his gentle wisdom. Peace was at the heart of his mission. He did not simply speak about peace as some lofty ideal for humanity to attain someday. He taught us how to live it—in our breathing, our walking, our eating, our listening and our interactions with one another. He showed us that peace begins right where we are. Perhaps that is why his words continue to touch me so deeply. My own journey has taught me that we cannot give the world something we are unwilling to cultivate within ourselves.

We can pray for peace. We can march for peace. We can speak about peace and place signs in our yards proclaiming peace. All of those things have value. Yet there is another question we must eventually ask ourselves, “Am I peaceful?”

What happens when someone disagrees with me?

What happens when plans suddenly change?

What happens when someone says something hurtful?

What happens when life does not look anything like I thought it would?

Can I still find my center?

This is where peace becomes more than a word. Thich Nhat Hanh compared our peacefulness and happiness to a flower blossoming. I love that image. A flower does not struggle to convince anyone of its beauty. It simply blossoms. It opens itself to the sun and becomes what it was created to be. Perhaps we are called to do the same. When we cultivate peace within ourselves, something changes in the energy we bring into a room. Our family feels it. Our friends feel it. The stranger standing beside us feels it. We may never know how far the ripple travels.

One peaceful person can change the atmosphere of a conversation.

One compassionate response can stop an argument from escalating.

One moment of forgiveness can interrupt generations of pain.

One person choosing love instead of fear can create a ripple that reaches farther than they will ever see.

This is how peace spreads. Not always through grand gestures, but through ordinary humans making extraordinary choices in everyday moments.

I have traveled many miles with the intention of spreading peace, blessing the land and water and reminding people that peace is possible. Yet perhaps one of the greatest lessons of this journey has been realizing that wherever I go, I must carry that peace within me. Otherwise, they are simply miles traveled. The real Peace On Earth Tour happens inside each of us. Every morning we wake up and decide what we will bring into the world that day. Will we add to the fear, anger and division? Or will we become a place where peace can take root? Thich Nhat Hanh's physical presence may have left this earth, but the light I thought had gone out that day did not disappear at all. It multiplied. It lives in every person who takes a conscious breath instead of reacting in anger. It lives in every person who chooses compassion. It lives in every person who listens deeply. It lives in every person who forgives. It lives in every person who decides, “Today, I will be peace.” Perhaps that is how the great teachers remain with us. Their bodies leave, but their wisdom becomes seeds scattered into millions of hearts. And when we water those seeds with love, awareness and compassion, they blossom. Just like a flower.

Dear Angels, how can we remain peaceful when there seems to be so much conflict, fear and division in the world around us?

Dear Ones, do not wait for the world to become peaceful before allowing peace into your heart. If you make your peace dependent upon the behavior of others or the circumstances around you, you will continually give away one of your greatest gifts. Peace is not the absence of storms. Peace is remembering who you are while the storm moves around you.

Return to your breath.

Return to your heart.

Return to the Divine presence that dwells within you.

You are not being asked to ignore suffering or turn away from the needs of your brothers and sisters. Quite the opposite. A peaceful heart allows you to see more clearly how you can serve. When you are not consumed by fear, anger or judgment, you become available to love. Understand, Dear Ones, that your peace has power. Each time you choose compassion instead of condemnation, you add peace to the collective. Each time you forgive instead of retaliate, you add peace. Each time you listen instead of insisting upon being heard, you add peace. Each time you look upon another and remember the Divine light within them, even when they have forgotten it themselves, you add peace.

Never underestimate these moments. Humanity changes one heart at a time, and the heart you have been entrusted with is your own. Tend to it lovingly. Water it with prayer. Nourish it with gratitude. Open it with compassion. Then allow yourself to blossom. The fragrance of your peace will travel farther than you can imagine.

You ask how to bring peace to the world. We say to you: Become it.

Angels Whisper: Peace does not begin when the world stops fighting. Peace begins when you stop allowing the world to determine the condition of your heart. Breathe deeply, Dear One. Return to Love. Become the peace you wish to see, and then watch as your light quietly invites another heart to blossom.
