“I'm not in this world to live up to your expectations and you're not in this world to live up to mine.” Bruce Lee
When I sat with the angels and asked what to focus on today, the word that came through was “expectations.” At first, I simply smiled because life had already been teaching me about this in unexpected ways. This past week I found myself in an unfamiliar home, learning how to care for two horses. I didn’t know what to expect, but I quickly discovered their personalities. Chuck, a quarter horse with a big, mischievous spirit, has always been the trickster. Every time I went out to care for him, I expected antics, surprises, and a test of my patience. Then there’s Comanche, a gentle soul, consistent and cooperative—reliable as the morning sun. Well, today they decided to surprise me. Chuck, the one I usually brace myself for, was the perfect gentleman—obedient, calm, even walking into the correct stall without resistance. Comanche, on the other hand, planted his hooves firmly, turned stubborn, and flat-out refused to do what he was asked. They switched roles entirely, as if to say, “Don’t box us in with your expectations.” I laughed, because I could feel the angels nudging me: “See? This is your lesson today.” Expectations limit not only others but also ourselves. They paint pictures in our minds of how things “should” go, and when reality doesn’t match, we can feel disappointment or frustration. But if we release expectations, we open ourselves to be surprised by life’s beauty, humor, and wisdom. The horses reminded me that we are all multifaceted beings. Just because someone—or even an animal—acts a certain way most of the time doesn’t mean that is all they are. We can all surprise one another when we are given space to simply be.
Dear Angels, why do we cling so tightly to expectations of ourselves and others?
Dear Ones, because your human mind loves patterns, safety, and predictability. Expectations seem to offer control, yet they often create only disappointment when life doesn’t align with your script. We invite you to see expectations as walls that box in possibility. Instead, step into curiosity and wonder. Each moment is fresh, alive, and full of potential. Release the need to decide in advance how it “should” unfold, and instead delight in how it does. When you let go of rigid expectations, you make space for miracles, surprises, and grace to flow.
Angels Whisper: Life is sweeter when you stop expecting and start allowing.
Today, I promise to follow the AAA: Accept, Align, Allow.
