"Be the person your dog thinks you are." – Unknown
Over the course of this lifetime, I have been blessed with the companionship of many animals. My first dog was a tiny Chihuahua named Peppy. Since then, I have shared my life with dogs of all sizes—from little lap dogs to a big-hearted Rottweiler named Rock—and several beloved cats as well. While each had a unique personality, they all shared one remarkable quality: when I looked into their eyes, I saw God. Animals have a way of seeing beyond our masks. They do not care about our titles, accomplishments, bank accounts, or mistakes. They see directly into our hearts. They greet us with unconditional love, unwavering loyalty, and a trust that is both humbling and inspiring.
The Bible tells us: "Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name." (Genesis 2:19)
I often smile when I think about the word dog. Perhaps it is no coincidence that it mirrors the word God. Turn it around, and there it is—a reminder of the Divine presence reflected back to us through these beautiful creatures. Whether that was intentional or not, dogs certainly seem to embody many of the qualities we associate with God: unconditional love, forgiveness, patience, loyalty, and acceptance. Have you ever noticed how your dog reacts when you walk through the door? It doesn't matter if you've been gone for five minutes or five hours. You are greeted as though you are the most wonderful person on the planet. Your dog doesn't keep score of your shortcomings. It doesn't replay your mistakes. It simply loves. What if we learned to see ourselves through those loving eyes?
Many of us are far harder on ourselves than anyone else could ever be. We focus on what we have done wrong instead of what we have done right. We criticize ourselves for not being perfect. Yet our pets seem to recognize something we often forget—that beneath all our fears and imperfections lives a beautiful soul worthy of love. Perhaps one of the reasons animals come into our lives is to teach us about the nature of God's love. They show us how to be present. They remind us to play. They comfort us when we grieve. They celebrate with us when we are joyful. They offer companionship without judgment and affection without conditions.
I believe every animal carries a spark of the Divine. They are angels in fur coats, quietly teaching us lessons that many humans spend a lifetime trying to learn. The next time your dog looks at you with adoration, pause for a moment. Instead of brushing it off, ask yourself: What if this is how God sees me? What if the Divine looks upon me with that same acceptance, that same delight, that same unconditional love? And then perhaps the challenge becomes clear: to become the person our dog already believes we are.
Dear Angels, why do animals love us so completely, even when we struggle to love ourselves?
Dear Ones, animals remember what many humans have forgotten. They recognize the soul before the personality. They see your light before they see your wounds. They do not measure your worth by your accomplishments or your failures. They simply respond to the vibration of love that exists within you. Animals arrive as teachers, healers, companions, and mirrors. Through their eyes, you are offered a glimpse of your own divine nature. When you allow yourself to receive their love, you begin to remember the truth of who you are. The love they give so freely is a reflection of the love that Heaven holds for you every moment of every day.
Angels Whisper: When your pet looks at you with love, know that you are seeing yourself through Heaven's eyes. You are more cherished, more beautiful, and more worthy than you have ever imagined.
Today, I promise to remember my magnificence just as the animals I cherish would want me to do.
