A DIVINE RECIPE

Heart-shaped pink and red frosted cake on a white board, decorated with ruffles and the word Love in the center.

“Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none.” – William Shakespeare

What a wonderful ideal, right? If we humans truly understood the power behind this simple recipe, perhaps we would exist in a world of harmony. It sounds simple enough. But how many times have I followed a recipe exactly and the meal or cake did not turn out as expected? I can have all the right ingredients, measure everything carefully, follow every instruction, and still something goes awry. Maybe I took it out of the oven too soon or left it in too long. Maybe the temperature was not quite right. Perhaps I substituted an ingredient thinking it wouldn't make much difference.

Life can be like that too. We are given some wonderful ingredients for creating a beautiful life—love, compassion, kindness, forgiveness, discernment, patience and grace. Yet knowing the ingredients and learning how to use them are two very different things.

Shakespeare's words give us three ingredients that, when combined with spiritual awareness, offer a powerful recipe for how to walk through this world.

Love all. This may be the most challenging ingredient of all. It is easy to love the people who love us. It is easy to send blessings to those who support us, encourage us and treat us kindly. But what about those who disagree with us? What about the person who has hurt us? What about the one whose actions we simply cannot understand? Love does not mean approval. This is something I believe we sometimes confuse. We can love another soul while disagreeing with their behavior. We can recognize the Divine spark within someone without inviting their chaos into our lives. We can send love from a distance. Jesus taught us to love one another, and He even took that teaching further by telling us to love our enemies. That is a tall order for our human selves. Yet perhaps He understood something we sometimes forget: love changes the one who gives it. When I hold hatred in my heart, I am the vessel holding the hatred. When I hold love, I am the vessel filled with love.

Trust a few. Now we add discernment to the recipe. Loving everyone does not mean trusting everyone. Trust is sacred. It develops through honesty, consistency and experience. We can have compassion for someone while understanding that they may not be a safe person with whom to share our deepest thoughts, dreams or vulnerabilities. There is no contradiction in saying, I love you as a soul, but I cannot give you access to every part of my life. Sometimes the most loving thing we can do—for ourselves and for another person—is establish a boundary. Our angels continually remind us to listen to that inner knowing. We feel energy. We receive nudges. Something inside whispers, Pay attention. That is not necessarily judgment. It can simply be discernment.

Do wrong to none. Imagine what our world would look like if we all lived by those four words. Do wrong to none. Not only with our actions, but with our words. With our thoughts. With what we repeat about another person. With what we post online. With how we respond when we are angry, frightened or hurt. It doesn't mean we will always get it right. We are human, after all. Sometimes we leave the cake in the oven too long. Sometimes we forget an ingredient. Sometimes our emotions turn the heat up far beyond what is needed. That is where grace enters the recipe.

Grace allows us to say, I could have handled that differently.

Grace allows us to apologize.

Grace allows us to forgive.

Grace allows us to begin again.

Perhaps creating a more peaceful world isn't as complicated as we make it. Maybe we simply need to keep returning to the recipe.

Love everyone.

Use discernment about whom you trust.

And make the conscious choice to cause no harm.

Then, when you don't get it exactly right, sprinkle in a little forgiveness, adjust the temperature and try again. We are all learning how to prepare this magnificent feast called life.

Dear Angels, why is it sometimes so difficult to love everyone while still protecting ourselves from those who may hurt us?

Dear Ones, because you have been taught that love requires access. It does not. Love is the recognition of the Divine essence that exists within every soul. Trust is something different. Trust belongs to the human experience and is developed through actions, choices and consistency. You may love a soul and still close a door. You may forgive someone and still choose not to walk beside them. You may wish another person peace while understanding that their journey does not belong intertwined with yours.

Do not confuse boundaries with a lack of love. A boundary created from anger becomes a wall. A boundary created from wisdom becomes a doorway through which only peace may enter. Love without losing yourself. Trust your inner guidance. Choose kindness whenever possible.

And when another cannot meet you in love, bless them on their journey without believing you must follow them there. You are learning the sacred balance between an open heart and a discerning spirit.

Angels Whisper: Love does not require you to open every door. Keep your heart open, your wisdom awake and your actions rooted in kindness. Love all, trust wisely and leave no footprints of harm behind you.

Today, I promise to love all, trust few and strive to do no harm.
