RETURNING TO CENTER

A lizard with a daisy on its head rests on green grass. Yellow flowers are in the background, creating a peaceful, natural setting.

"To go in the dark with a light is to know the light. To know the dark, go dark. Go without sight, and find that the dark, too, blooms and sings."  Wendell Berry

In the quiet moments, when the soul whispers and the world grows still, we begin to hear what matters. But how rare those moments are now. Distractions have become the background music of our lives—buzzing phones, endless scrolling, ceaseless to-do lists, and the pressure to be everywhere at once. We chase stimulation like a thirsty soul chases water, yet often find ourselves more parched than before. Distraction isn’t just the noise around us; it’s also the noise within us. It’s the subtle tug away from the present moment, away from the sacred. It often wears the disguise of productivity, entertainment, or even responsibility. But underneath, distraction is anything that pulls us away from connection—connection with our deeper self, with others, and with the Divine. We are not simply avoiding boredom; we are avoiding being. Because to be—truly, fully—is vulnerable. It requires facing silence, stillness, and sometimes pain. But in that space, there is also peace. There is wisdom. There is God.

Dear Angels, every spiritual tradition speaks of the importance of attentiveness. Whether it's the Christian call to "be still and know," the Buddhist practice of mindfulness, or the Sufi yearning to "die before you die" to the ego's illusions, all paths point to a central truth: awakening requires presence. Distraction fractures our attention, scattering it like seeds in the wind. And when our attention is divided, so is our spirit. We become surface dwellers in a deep world, moving but not arriving, speaking but not listening, and existing but not living.

Dear Ones, the sacred practice of self-awareness is not to be perfectly focused, but to return—again and again, noticing how you have drifted, and then coming back to the breath, the heart, the prayer, the moment. Returning is an act of devotion. It is you saying, “Even though the world pulls me away, I choose to come back.” It’s a daily pilgrimage from the outer noise to the inner sanctuary. To combat distraction, you don’t need to escape the world—you need to reorient within it. You can create small rituals of presence: a few minutes of silence in the morning, lighting a candle before work, a walk without headphones, pausing before a meal. These are not grand acts, but they are sacred ones. They are declarations that your attention matters. That your soul matters. Distractions aren’t just obstacles—they can also be teachers. They reveal your attachments, your restlessness, your fears. And by noticing them, you learn more about yourselves and begin to grow.

Angels Whisper:  the next time distraction comes, don't just push it away. Ask it gently: “What am I really avoiding?” Let it show you what still needs healing. And then return. Again. And again. And again. Because the Divine is always waiting—not in the noise, but in the stillness you’ve been avoiding. In the center you forgot you had.

Today, I promise to always come back to center.
