OWNING YOUR STORY

Brené Brown writes and speaks beautifully about imperfection. We are not perfect beings, and that is a fact. Yet how much of our lives do we spend trying to convince ourselves—and everyone around us—that we should be? We hide the scars. We soften the truth. We replay moments from our past and wish we had chosen differently. Sometimes we carry shame over decisions made by a younger version of ourselves who simply did not know what we know today. But what if every chapter belongs in the book?
I have lived enough life to know there are chapters I would never want to repeat. There have been heartbreaks, disappointments, illnesses, wrong turns, endings, and moments when I wondered how I would ever find my way forward. There have also been miracles, laughter, love, adventures, beautiful friendships, and moments when God's presence was so undeniable that all I could do was stand in awe. They are all part of my story.
We sometimes believe loving ourselves means loving only the parts we are proud of. I don't believe that anymore. True self-love is being able to look back at the person you once were and say, “I understand you. I forgive you. I honor what you survived. And I thank you for getting me here.” That takes courage.
There is tremendous freedom in no longer running from your own story. When we stop trying to erase the difficult chapters, we begin to see how much wisdom they contain. The things that once brought us to our knees may become the very experiences that allow us to sit beside another hurting soul and say, “I understand.” God can use all of it.
Romans 8:28 reminds us that “all things work together for good to them that love God.” It doesn't say only the pretty things. It doesn't say only the things we got right. ALL things. Perhaps our imperfections are not interruptions in our spiritual journey. Perhaps they are part of it. A cracked vessel can still carry water. A wounded heart can still give love. A person who has fallen can rise again. And sometimes the places where we have been broken become the places where the Light shines through most beautifully.
We are so quick to extend compassion to others while withholding it from ourselves. We tell our friends, “You did the best you could.” We remind them that they are worthy of love. We encourage them to forgive themselves and move forward. Dear One, when was the last time you offered those same words to yourself? Your story does not need to be perfect to be sacred. You do not have to edit out the messy parts before you are worthy of love. You do not have to wait until you have everything figured out before you celebrate who you are becoming.
Own the tears.
Own the laughter.
Own the choices that worked and the ones that taught you what didn't.
Own the person you were, the person you are, and the beautiful soul you are still becoming.
Then wrap your arms around the whole story and say, “This is mine. Every chapter brought me here.”
That may indeed be one of the bravest things we ever do.
Dear Angels, how do we learn to love ourselves when there are parts of our story that we wish we could change?
Dear Ones, you look upon your past through the eyes of who you are today and wonder why you did not know then what you know now. We ask you to release this judgment. The soul does not come into human form already knowing every lesson. You came to experience, to learn, to stumble, to rise, to remember, and ultimately to love.
Do not tear pages from the sacred book of your life simply because they contain pain. Those pages hold wisdom. They show your courage. They reveal how many times you thought you could go no farther—and yet you did.
Look upon the former versions of yourself with compassion. Speak to them gently. Thank them for carrying you through the darkness until you could see the Light again. There is nothing in your story that separates you from Divine Love. You are not loved because you are perfect. You are loved because you are. Own your story, Dear One. Bless every chapter. Forgive what needs forgiving. Release what no longer belongs to you. And then turn the page. There is still so much more to write.
Angels Whisper: You are not the mistakes in your story. You are the love that carried you through them. Bless the pages behind you, embrace the page you are on, and write the next one with love.
