YOU HOLD THE BRUSH

“We are not given a good life or a bad life. We are given a life. It is up to us to make it good or bad.” Anonymous

Every life begins as a blank space, filled with possibility. There is something miraculous about realizing that each new day places a fresh canvas before us. Yesterday may have left some marks. There may be colors we wish we had never chosen, lines we would like to erase, and places where the picture did not turn out anything like we imagined. Yet today, the brush is once again in our hand. Moment by moment, thought by thought, choice by choice, we participate in creating our lives. What we choose in this moment becomes part of the foundation for the next one, and eventually all those moments come together to form what we call our future.

The question is: Are we creating consciously? When we are unconscious of our role in the creative process, it can feel as though life is simply happening to us. We react to circumstances, other people's actions, disappointments, unexpected detours and whatever happens to appear in front of us. Without realizing it, we relinquish our creative power and place ourselves at the mercy of circumstances. Then, when something shows up that we would never consciously choose, we wonder, “How did I get here?”

This does not mean that we consciously create every difficult circumstance that comes into our lives. We live in a world filled with other people making choices, natural events occurring and situations beyond our individual control. The power we possess is not necessarily in controlling everything that happens. Our power is in choosing what we do with what happens. That is where the blank canvas becomes so important. We may not have chosen the storm, but we choose whether we search for the rainbow afterward. We may not have chosen the ending, but we choose whether we allow it to become a new beginning. We may not have chosen the wound, but we can choose healing. We may not have chosen the obstacle, but we can choose what we become because of it.

Perhaps that is what makes this human journey so extraordinary. A good life is not necessarily one where everything goes according to plan. It is one where we learn to find meaning, beauty, love and even gratitude amid the unexpected. There have certainly been times in my own life when I could not understand what was happening. Looking at only that particular moment, I might have labeled it "bad." Yet when I moved farther down the road and looked back, I could see how that experience redirected me, strengthened me, introduced me to someone important or opened a door I would never have noticed otherwise. Sometimes we judge the painting before it is finished. What looks like a dark streak across the canvas today may someday provide the contrast that makes the light stand out even more beautifully.

Perhaps instead of asking, "Why is this happening to me?" we can become curious and ask, "What can I create from this?" That question returns the brush to our hand. We can choose love in this moment. We can choose kindness. We can choose forgiveness. We can choose gratitude. We can choose peace. We can choose to begin again. And if we don't like what we created yesterday, we don't have to keep painting the same picture today.

Dear Angels, how do we become more conscious creators of our lives instead of simply reacting to whatever happens around us?

Dear Ones, you are creating in every moment. Your thoughts, words, intentions and actions are colors placed upon the canvas of your earthly experience. Become mindful of what you are adding to your masterpiece. Do not fear the darker colors. They, too, have purpose. Without shadow, you would not recognize the brilliance of the light.

You came into this experience not to control every circumstance but to discover the Divine power within you as you move through them. Each moment offers you an opportunity to choose again. Ask yourself, "What would love create here?" Then listen.

You cannot repaint yesterday, but you can choose the color you place upon today. Do not look at one difficult chapter and declare that you have been given a bad life. The story is still unfolding. The painting is still being created. Hold the brush with love. Choose consciously. And remember that you never create alone. We stand beside you, gently whispering toward the light.

Angels Whisper: Life is the canvas. Love is the palette. You hold the brush. Paint this moment beautifully.

Today, I promise to use all the colors of the palette as I paint each day.
