YOU DON'T NEED THE WHOLE MAP

“If you don't know where you're going, any road'll take you there.” ―George Harrison

One of the interesting things about travel is looking at all the options. There is rarely only one way to get from where you are to where you want to be. Depending on the road you choose, the experience can be completely different—even when the destination is the same. I have found this especially fascinating during the Peace On Earth Tour. After six years of traveling and crossing the United States from coast to coast several times, I have learned a thing or two about roads. I know which states I enjoy driving through, which highways make me smile, and which ones I would just as soon avoid if there is another option.

So, when I know my destination, plotting my route is fairly easy. I can look at the map and say, “I want to go here, but I don't want to go there.” I can choose the scenic route, the fastest route, or perhaps a road I have never traveled before. But when I am simply looking for an adventure with no clear destination in mind, George Harrison's words ring true: any road will take me there.

Isn't life much the same? Sometimes we know exactly where we want to go. We have a dream, a goal, a calling, or perhaps simply a feeling that something more is waiting for us. We may not know exactly how we are going to get there, but at least we have pointed ourselves in a direction. Other times, we have absolutely no idea. We stand at the intersection of life staring at all the possibilities and wonder, Which way do I go?

We can certainly create boundaries around our journey. We can decide which experiences we want and which ones we would prefer to avoid. We can say, “I've been down that road before and I'm not going back.” Sometimes that is wisdom. We have learned the lesson, and there is no need to repeat it. But sometimes the road we are trying hardest to avoid may be the very road that holds our greatest growth.

That is the tricky part. We tend to think the best road is the easiest one—the road with no construction, no potholes, no detours and certainly no unexpected storms. Yet when I look back at my own life, I realize some of my greatest spiritual lessons came from roads I never would have chosen for myself.

Those roads stretched me.

They challenged me.

They taught me to trust.

And sometimes they brought me to places I didn't even know I needed to be.

Perhaps that is why we cannot always see the whole map. If God showed us every mountain we would have to climb, every detour we would encounter and every rough patch of road ahead, we might never leave the driveway. Instead, we are often given just enough light to see the next turn. And then we are asked to trust.

Dear Angels, how do we know which road to take when we are unsure of our direction?

Dear Ones, do not fear the crossroads. They are not places of confusion but places of possibility. You are never without guidance, even when the road ahead seems uncertain. There will be times when the way before you is clear and times when you will be asked to move forward without knowing where the road will lead. Both experiences serve you.

Listen to the quiet voice within. Pay attention to what brings expansion to your spirit. Notice the doors that open and the ones that repeatedly close. Do not assume that an obstacle means you are traveling the wrong road. Sometimes the obstacle is the lesson.

You may choose the familiar road because it feels safe, or you may choose the road that stretches you beyond what you believe you are capable of becoming. Neither choice is wasted. Every experience offers wisdom when you are willing to receive it. There are no meaningless miles on your journey. Even the detours have purpose.

When you cannot see the destination, trust the next step. When you cannot understand the road, trust the One who sees beyond the bend. You are not required to know the entire journey before you begin. You are simply asked to move when your heart says, Go.

Angels Whisper: You do not need the entire map. Sometimes the road you would never have chosen leads to the place your soul has been asking to find. Trust the next turn. We are traveling with you.

Today, I promise to trust the journey.
