WHERE LOVE WALKS, FLOWERS BLOOM

An honor walk (or hero walk) is a ceremonial event to commemorate a patient whose organs are to be harvested for donation. The event normally takes place as the patient is transported to an operating room or waiting ambulance prior to organ procurement. It is typically held for patients on life support with no chance of survival, but can also be held for living donors. I have only observed this ceremony once and that was as my brother and I were being wheeled to the operating room for me to receive his gift of life as he donated his kidney to me. The hallways were lined with hospital staff as we were wheeled side by side, holding hands as we both understood how life-changing this was. I have thought of that moment many times throughout the last 51 years. I didn’t fully understand what I would go through, but I knew that it meant survival. It meant freedom as I would no longer need to be tied to a dialysis machine three times a week.

Life has a way of presenting us with moments that forever change who we are. Some of those moments are wrapped in joy and celebration. Others arrive cloaked in grief, uncertainty, and sacrifice. Yet even in the darkest corridors of life, there are flowers waiting to be seen if we choose to look with the eyes of our hearts.

I can still feel the emotion of that moment. Neither of us truly knew what lay ahead. We didn't know what recovery would look like or what challenges might come afterward. We only knew one thing with absolute certainty—love had brought us to that hallway. For me, that walk represented hope. It meant survival. It meant another chance to dream, to laugh, to serve, and to discover the purpose that God had planned long before I ever understood it.

For my brother, it meant willingly giving away a part of himself so that someone he loved could continue living. That is love in its purest form. Over the years I have reflected on that day countless times. At the time, I focused mostly on receiving the miracle. Today, I also recognize the flowers that surrounded us along the way. The flower of courage that bloomed in my brother's heart. The flower of compassion shown by every member of the medical team. The flower of faith that carried our family through uncertain days. The flower of gratitude that has continued to blossom every day of the fifty-one years since. Sometimes we imagine flowers only grow in sunny gardens. Yet some of the most beautiful blossoms push their way through cracks in concrete or emerge after devastating storms. Their beauty is made even more precious because of the difficult conditions they overcame.

So it is with our lives. Many of the greatest miracles are born from seasons we would never have chosen. Illness can awaken compassion. Loss can deepen gratitude. Challenges can uncover strengths we never knew we possessed. What first appears to be the ending of one chapter often becomes the beginning of a far greater story. Looking back now, I realize that kidney transplant was not simply the event that saved my life. It became the foundation for the life I was called to live. It opened my heart to serving others, sharing hope, speaking about miracles, and reminding people that every day is a gift to be cherished. I often meet transplant recipients, living donors, donor families, and those still waiting for their miracle. Each one carries a unique story, yet they all remind me of the incredible capacity of the human spirit to love beyond itself. Their lives are living bouquets of hope planted in the hearts of others.

Dear Angels, how can we see the flowers – the blessings – when the thorns of life can be so devastating?

Dear Ones, wherever you find yourself today, do not become so focused on the thorns that you miss the flowers. Even during seasons of uncertainty, there are blessings quietly unfolding around you. A kind smile. A helping hand. A prayer whispered on your behalf. A sunrise. A dragonfly landing nearby. A stranger's encouragement. A second chance. These are heaven's flowers blooming along your path.

When you train your heart to notice them, gratitude begins to replace fear. Hope begins to replace despair. Love begins to replace doubt. The circumstances around you may not change overnight, but the way you experience them certainly will. Every flower is a reminder that life continues to create beauty, even after the harshest winter. Every act of kindness is another blossom in God's eternal garden. And every breath you take is another opportunity to become a flower in someone else's life.

Angels Whisper: Beloved, never believe that your life is measured only by the hardships you have endured. It is measured by the love you have shared, the hope you have inspired, and the beauty you have chosen to see. Open your eyes with gratitude each day, and you will discover that Heaven has been planting flowers along your path all along. Become one of those flowers, blooming wherever you are planted, so others may find hope simply because they crossed your path.:

Today, I promise to collect bouquets of flowers each day.
