THANK YOU FOR ONE MORE DAY

“Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life, but define yourself.” —Harvey Fierstein
When you opened your eyes this morning, what was your first thought? Was it your schedule? Your phone? The things you needed to get done? The problems waiting for you? Did your mind immediately begin making its list of responsibilities, worries, and unfinished business? Or did you simply think, “Thank You. I get one more day.” For me, gratitude begins right there. It has become part of my morning routine to acknowledge that every new day I am given is a gift, not a guarantee. Before the noise of the world has an opportunity to tell me who I should be, what I should accomplish, or how I should feel about myself, I remember something much more important: I am a creation of the Almighty. That truth changes everything.
Throughout our lives, people will try to define us. Sometimes they do it intentionally and sometimes without even realizing it. They may tell us we are too much or not enough. Too old. Too young. Too emotional. Too ambitious. Too different. Too damaged. Too unrealistic. If we hear those voices often enough, we may begin repeating them to ourselves. That is when someone else's definition can become our identity.
Harvey Fierstein reminds us not to surrender that power. “Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself.” I would take that one step further. Remember who defined you first. Before the world placed labels on you, God called you His creation. Before anyone decided whether you were worthy, successful, beautiful, intelligent, important, or lovable, you came into this world carrying the Divine spark within you. You were already enough. Gratitude helps me remember that.
Gratitude does not mean pretending life is perfect. It isn't. Being grateful does not mean we won't experience pain, disappointment, fear, illness, rejection, grief, or loss. It doesn't mean we ignore difficult circumstances or silence ourselves when something needs to be spoken. Sometimes gratitude looks like joy. Sometimes gratitude looks like courage. Sometimes it is standing up after life has knocked you down and saying, “I am still here. I’m still standing.”
I know something about being given another day. There have been moments in my life when tomorrow was certainly not promised. Perhaps that is why opening my eyes every morning feels like a celebration.
Every sunrise is another chance.
Another conversation.
Another hug.
Another laugh.
Another opportunity to say, “I love you.”
Another opportunity to forgive.
Another opportunity to help someone.
Another opportunity to speak our truth.
Another opportunity to make a difference.
Another day to experience this incredible, messy, unpredictable, magnificent thing we call life.
We spend so much time trying to become something when perhaps the greater spiritual journey is remembering who we already are. You are not the criticism someone spoke over you. You are not the rejection you experienced. You are not your failures. You are not your illness, your bank account, your relationship status, your age, your mistakes, or the chapter of life you are currently walking through.
Those are experiences. They are not your identity. So today, before you allow the world to define you, become quiet enough to hear the voice within. Ask yourself: Who am I when all the labels are removed? And then listen.
Dear Angels, how do we stop allowing other people and our circumstances to define who we are?
Dear Ones, you begin by remembering that your identity was established in Love before the world ever spoke your name. You came into this experience carrying the Light of the Creator within you. Nothing another person says about you can diminish that Light unless you accept their words as your truth.
Release the labels that no longer serve you.
Release the stories that tell you that you are less than Divine.
Release the need for others to understand your journey.
You do not need permission to shine. You do not need approval to speak your truth with love. You do not need another person to validate the sacredness of your existence.
Each morning when you awaken, place your hand upon your heart and give thanks. You have been given another day to remember who you are and another opportunity to demonstrate that remembrance through love.
Walk gently, but walk boldly.
Speak kindly, but do not silence your truth.
Love others, but do not abandon yourself in the process.
And above all, Dear Ones, remember that gratitude is not simply thanking God for what you have.
Sometimes gratitude is thanking God for who you are becoming.
Angels Whisper: Before the world tells you who you are today, remember who created you. Open your eyes, breathe deeply, and whisper, “Thank You for one more day to love, to grow, to serve, and to be fully me.”
Today, I promise to remember my magnificence.
