OCTOBER MAGIC
“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” L.M. Montgomery

October has a way of asking us to pay attention. The light changes first. It softens around the edges. The air feels a little cleaner, as if the sky has taken a deep breath. Then the trees begin their quiet show, one branch at a time, until suddenly the world is brushed with gold, rust, crimson, and amber.
I absolutely love the fall season. Everything seems to come alive with color, even as it is preparing to let go. That is part of the beauty. We drink it in because we know it will not last long. The leaves will dry. They will loosen. They will fall to the ground and become part of the earth.
A green hillside becomes a patchwork of orange and yellow. A single red leaf lands near your feet. The wind carries the scent of woodsmoke, dry grass, and earth. Even the silence feels different. It is not empty. It is full of change. For those of us who listen for angel whispers, October can feel like a message written across the trees.
Over the last couple of days, I have been driving cross-country. With October on the calendar, I hoped to see hills and highways bursting with fall color. That was not quite what greeted me. For miles and miles, there was not much to get excited about. The trees still held mostly to their green. The fields stretched out in familiar shades of brown and gold. The sky did its best, and the road kept unwinding ahead of me, but the dramatic fall display I had imagined was not there yet. As I came into Indiana, I began to see small signs of the season. A few trees had started to turn. Here and there, a branch showed a flash of orange or yellow. It was not the grand show I had pictured, but it was enough to make me smile.
Sometimes hope looks like a sprinkling. We can miss that if we expect the whole mountain to be on fire with color before we call it beautiful. We can pass right by the small blessings because they do not match the picture in our minds. A tree does not need to be completely transformed to be worthy of notice. A life does not need to be fully healed to hold moments of grace. A day does not need to be perfect to offer a sign from above.
The angels often work this way. A feather on the sidewalk. A song at the right time. A number that repeats. A memory that rises gently instead of painfully. A kind word from someone who had no idea how much it was needed.
Dear Angels, patience sounds peaceful until we have to practice it. We want answers to arrive quickly. We want the next door to open. We want the healing to be complete. We want proof that the journey has meaning. We want our expectations of colorful trees to happen like magic instead of waiting for nature to take its course. What is the lesson we are learning from having to wait when our thoughts are crying that we should have our desires fulfilled already?
Dear Ones, one of the reasons October feels so precious is because it passes quickly. The colors do not wait for you to be ready. A storm can strip a tree overnight. A cold snap can turn brilliance into brown. One busy week can cause you to miss the peak of the season altogether. That is not meant to make you anxious. It is a loving reminder to be present. Drink it in. Stand under the tree a little longer. Pull over safely and take the photo. Walk outside before answering one more message. Watch the way the light hits the leaves. Let yourself be glad for something simple.
Joy does not always arrive as a major life event. Sometimes it comes as a hillside in October. Sometimes it is a warm cup in your hands. Sometimes it is the first glimpse of color after a long, plain stretch of road. Presence turns an ordinary moment into a holy one. That does not mean every moment feels good. Life brings grief, stress, questions, and fatigue. There are seasons when the heart feels more like November than October. Even then, there is something to notice. A breath. A kindness. A sign. A small comfort. A bird lifting from a fencepost. The steady ground beneath your feet.
Do not pretend everything is bright. Just notice where light is still reaching you. Angel messages often come through nature because nature carries no pretense. A tree does not hide its season. A mountain does not apologize for being still. A leaf does not fear becoming part of the ground. Creation keeps teaching if you are willing to listen.
October says trust the turning. Honor the beauty while it is here. Let go when love asks you to. Believe there is still color ahead.
Those messages are simple, but they are not small. When life feels uncertain, you may look for a grand sign. Sometimes one comes. More often, the reassurance is woven into ordinary things. The soft edge of morning. The first gold leaf. The unexpected peace that comes after prayer. The sense that you are not alone, even on a long road.
That is October magic. It is not loud. It is sacred because it meets you exactly where you are.
Angels Whisper: A blessing for this October day
May this October remind you to look closely.
May you notice the color that is already here, even if it arrives in small patches.
May you find comfort in the truth that change can be guided, gentle, and filled with grace.
May you release what is ready to fall away, not with fear, but with trust.
May you rest when the road grows dark and believe that morning will show you more.
And may you be glad, deeply glad, to live in a world where there are Octobers.
Not because everything lasts, but because everything meaningful asks to be cherished while it is here.
Today, I promise to appreciate the color already in my life and stand in awe of what is to come.
