JOY LOVES COMPANY

“Misery might love company, but so does joy. And joy throws much better parties.” Billy Ivey

I saw another rainbow today, and I laughed out loud. There is something about a rainbow that instantly brings out the child in me. No matter how many I see, I still stop what I am doing and stare in wonder. They have become such a beautiful part of my journey that I can almost feel their essence before I see them—a gentle whisper from heaven saying, Look up. There is something here for you.

Yesterday, the skies grew dark and then the sun suddenly poked through the clouds. All the ingredients were there for a rainbow, or so I thought. I even told God, “That’s not fair! You have the rain, the clouds, and the sunshine. Where is my rainbow?” Apparently, God has a sense of humor. Today, the scene repeated itself. Dark clouds filled portions of the sky while brilliant sunshine streamed through in other places. I watched for a while, hopeful that those magical colors might appear. Eventually, I gave up and went about my day. Then I happened to glance out the window. And there it was.  My rainbow. I laughed out loud. It felt like God was saying, “You gave up too soon.

Isn't that how life works sometimes? We decide that something isn't going to happen because it hasn't happened according to our timetable. We stop watching. We stop expecting. Maybe we even stop believing. And then—just like magic—the rainbow appears.

Today had already been an interesting one. Mattie, one of Ruth's dogs, had me up throughout the night because she kept needing to go outside. Normally, all three dogs sleep peacefully through the night, so I knew this behavior was unusual. My intuition immediately told me something might be wrong, and I alerted Ruth, who is far away in another country right now. This afternoon, Mattie's daddy took her to the veterinarian. After the usual prodding, poking, examining, and sample taking, the vet suspected a urinary tract infection—the same thing my gut had been telling me. But another little lesson about joy was waiting when Mattie came home.

Her two brothers had been quite distraught while she was gone. They didn't understand where she had disappeared to or why she wasn't there with them. All they knew was that a member of their little pack was missing. Then Mattie walked back through the door. Joy! No explanations were needed. No discussion about where she had been or what had happened. Their beloved sister was home, and that was reason enough to celebrate.

Watching them reminded me of Billy Ivey's words: “Misery might love company, but so does joy.” We hear the first part of that saying all the time—misery loves company. Yet perhaps we don't talk nearly enough about the contagious nature of joy. Joy wants company too. Joy wants someone to call when the rainbow appears. Joy wants someone to hug when the good news comes. Joy wants dancing in the kitchen, laughing until your belly hurts, dogs celebrating at the front door, friends gathered around a table, and strangers smiling at each other for no particular reason. Joy expands when it is shared.

Perhaps that is why the angels continually remind us to look for the little things. We don't have to wait for some monumental event before we celebrate life. Sometimes the party is simply seeing a rainbow outside the window. Sometimes it is welcoming someone home. Sometimes it is realizing that what we thought was missing was simply waiting for the right moment to appear.

There will always be dark clouds. We cannot move through this human experience without encountering them. But the rainbow doesn't ask the clouds to disappear before it shows up. It appears because the rain and the light exist together. Maybe that is the greater message. We don't have to wait until every problem is solved to experience joy. We don't have to wait until the storm is completely over. We can find something beautiful right in the middle of it. And when we do, let's invite others to the party.

Dear Angels, how can we choose joy when there are still storms happening around us?

Dear Ones, joy is not the absence of the storm. Joy is the remembrance of the Light within the storm. You have been taught to wait for circumstances to become perfect before allowing yourselves to celebrate, yet life itself is worthy of celebration.

Look for the rainbow while the clouds are still present.

Listen for laughter in unexpected places.

Celebrate the return of one you love.

Share the beauty you discover with another soul.

Every time you choose joy, you create a vibration that reaches farther than you can see. One smile awakens another. One act of kindness inspires another. One grateful heart reminds another heart to remember its blessings. Do not underestimate the spiritual power of your joy. The world has enough invitations to fear, worry, and despair. Send out invitations of your own.

Invite others into gratitude.

Invite them into laughter.

Invite them into hope.

Invite them into love.

And when joy knocks on your door, Dear Ones, open it wide. The party has already begun.

Angels Whisper: The rainbow does not wait for the storm to disappear. It dances with the rain and the Light. So can you. Look up, Dear One. Joy is inviting you to the party.

Today, I promise to celebrate the joy in my life with others.
