HIDE AND WATCH

“If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it.” Michael Jordan
I’m not particularly good at climbing, but I am pretty good at not giving up. That perseverance has served me well throughout my lifetime. There’s a saying where I come from in the Appalachian mountains that we would use whenever someone told us we couldn’t do something: “Hide and watch!” Those two little words carry a lot of attitude. They mean, “You may not believe I can do it, but just stand back and watch me try.”
I think some of that stubbornness was inherited. Both of my parents were pretty tenacious people. They lived through the Great Depression, a time when people learned how to make something out of almost nothing. They learned to stretch what they had, work with their hands, depend on family and neighbors, and keep going even when life was difficult. That kind of resilience gets passed down.
Looking back over my own life, I can see plenty of walls. Some seemed impossibly high when I first stood in front of them. There were times when circumstances could have convinced me that the journey was over. There were disappointments, losses, health challenges, changes, closed doors, and moments when I simply could not see how I was going to get from where I was to where I wanted to be.
But here’s something I have learned about walls: they don't always mean stop. Sometimes they mean, Look again. Maybe there is a way around the wall. Maybe there is a door you haven't noticed. Maybe someone will show up with a ladder. Maybe God is asking you to wait until the right opening appears. And sometimes, yes, you simply have to start climbing.
We often pray for God to remove the obstacle in front of us. “Please, God, make this easier. Open the door. Move this wall.” What if the wall is part of the answer? What if there is something we need to discover about ourselves while standing in front of it? Courage we didn't know we possessed. Strength we had never needed before. Faith that only becomes visible when there is no obvious path forward.
Perseverance does not mean forcing everything to happen our way. There is a difference between determination and resistance. Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is keep climbing. Other times, the wisest thing we can do is surrender our plan and ask Spirit to show us another way. I have learned this repeatedly on the Peace On Earth Tour. I can make plans, map routes, decide where I think I should go next—and then life changes the itinerary. A door closes. Another opens. What looked like a wall turns out to be a divine detour. That is when trust becomes important. I don't have to know exactly how I am going to get over every wall. I only have to trust enough to take the next step.
Perhaps you are standing in front of a wall right now. Maybe it is financial, emotional, physical, spiritual, or relational. Maybe you have been staring at it so long that you have begun to believe it is permanent. Before you turn around, look again. Ask yourself, “What is this wall teaching me?” Then ask God, “What is my next step?” Don't worry about seeing the whole staircase, the whole ladder, or even the other side. Just listen for the next instruction. And if somebody tells you that you can't possibly make it? Well, you already know what this Appalachian girl is going to say. Hide and watch!
Dear Angels, how do we know whether we should keep pushing through an obstacle or surrender and choose another path?
Dear Ones, the answer is found not in the struggle but in the stillness. When you encounter what appears to be an immovable wall, do not immediately declare defeat, nor exhaust yourself trying to force your way through it. Become quiet. Ask what the obstacle has come to teach you.
There are walls that strengthen you as you climb them, and there are walls that lovingly redirect you toward a path you could not yet see. Discernment comes when you release your attachment to how the journey must unfold. Your task is not to control every outcome. Your task is to remain willing.
Take the step that is shown to you. Reach for the hand extended toward you. Rest when you need to rest. Climb when you are called to climb. And when the way opens in an unexpected direction, trust enough to follow it. aYou have already overcome more than you remember. The strength you seek is not waiting somewhere beyond the wall. It is already within you.
Angels Whisper: The wall before you may not be blocking your path. It may be revealing your strength. Ask for the next step, trust the answer, and keep moving.
Today, I promise to keep persevering each day, no matter what.
